Amentha Rajagobal, Maya Sengupta and Maya Murray, both undergrads, have discovered that alcohol can have a significant effect on the brain’s development. This is most likely the hippocampus, which is responsible for spatial navigation and memory formation.

Researchers have known for some time that alcohol can affect brain function in adults, however, less is known about the effects of alcohol on the brains of children.

Students asked undergraduate students questions about their alcohol use to test its effectiveness. They wanted to know the date they had their first drink, how often they drink, and how much.

They then asked the subjects to play a game where they had to remember the locations of objects in Minecraft’s world. Minecraft.

The two researchers discovered that those who began drinking earlier, had more trouble recalling the locations of objects than those who drank later in adolescence.

“The frontal lobe and the hippocampus keep developing into our twenties,” says Rajagobal. “They continue to grow and change in ways that the rest of the brain isn’t, and so they’re more vulnerable to damage caused by things such as drinking too early at age.” Priority Game

The consequences of this damage, however, could extend well beyond the diminished ability to navigate a video game or even walk down the street.

Sengupta Murray claims that the hippocampus is responsible for forming memories. “Let’s say you have a dog: you can smell it, you can hear it, you can feel it. The hippocampus connects all those sensations and creates the memories of your dog.
